The decision is just one of the numerous roadblocks that the PTI claims have been placed in its path as it prepares for the election on February 8.

But it hasn’t given up. Whether it’s candidates pounding the streets like Mrs Dar or technology that sends a leader from a jail cell to the front of a rally, it’s demonstrating its willingness to throw everything it’s got at this struggle.

During the past election, Usman, Mrs Dar’s son, led the group through Sialkot. He was a top PTI official and former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special adviser on youth matters.

However, in early October, after vanishing for three weeks, he emerged on television, claiming that Imran Khan was the “mastermind of the 9 May riots”.

Imran Khan Arrest Last Year

On the day Imran Khan was arrested last year, nationwide protests erupted, some of which turned violent. Hundreds of Khan supporters were arrested on charges of destroying military structures, including the mansion of Lahore’s top military official .

Khan was eventually released, but the crackdown on his party persisted.

In the weeks and months following the protests, members of his party announced their resignation from the PTI or from politics entirely. Many of his top officials were among them, according to the authorities, indicating that Khan’s former supporters did not want to be identified with a party responsible for the disturbance.

The PTI said the resignations were forced.

Mrs Dar was not impressed, whatever the case may be.

“When Usman Dar gave his statement, I did not agree to it,” says the woman who made the statement. “I told him that it would have been preferable if my son had returned dead. “You made a false statement.”

Mrs Dar’s overt campaigning strategy, however, is not feasible for all PTI candidates.

Some candidates have continued to campaign while incarcerated; as long as they have not been convicted of a crime, they are free to run for office from prison.

Others have completely avoided the police and are conducting their campaigns from hiding.
